Super Bowl 2013: Which Rookies Will Have Biggest Impact?

Most rookies only play on special teams, but the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers have a few who contribute greatly to the team.

The 6'0 '', 218-pound back from Temple carried the ball 108 times in the regular season for 532 yards and one touchdown.

Pierce is a bruising running back who excelsa between the tackles. On second downs and less than six to go, Pierce has rushed 12 times for 98 yards. On third downs and less than six to go, Pierce has rushed five times for 30 yards and a touchdown, as per ESPN.

"he's the toughest man on earth," Rice said. "That's my man." We knew it would be tough sledding. They always do a great job against the run, but we just had to execute. Having a dual threat really helps out."

Pierce should see plenty of opportunities against the 49ers to try and move the chains, and his past results indicates that I ' ll have success.

Consider: Adam Vinatieri has two game-winning kicks in Super Bowls and the famous "Tuck Rule" game-winning kick in the 2001 AFC Divisional Championship Game. The Patriots would not have won their Super Bowls without him.

despite being a rookie, Tucker has been solid. In the regular season, he was 30-of-33, with a long of 56. In the playoffs, he's 2-of-2.

Tucker will likely have another opportunity for a big kick in the Super Bowl. He's shown poise beyond his years as a rookie, but it's possible that I could determine whether the Ravens win or not.

The Niners have begun to take advantage of this speed. Against Atlanta, James ran five times for 34 yards and one touchdown.

The Ravens do not have a great run defense. They gave up 122.8 rushing yards per game, which was ranked 20th in the league.

James should see time as a change-of-pace back and could have a really nice game against the suspect Ravens run defense.

Bolton Wanderers Transfer Rumour Round-Up - 2013-03-08 16:44

Chris Manning takes a look at the latest newspaper and internet rumours surrounding potential transfer ins and outs as the deadline approaches.

so it's now only a matter of days until the January transfer window shuts. Well, if you listen to Sky Sports News then the window does not merely shut... its slam SHUT. Seems reckless to me. However I suppose if it's double-glazed it might be able to withstand it.

yes that's right, another loanee from Liverpool. However this time it's their Uruguayan centre-half who was brought in last season for a hefty fee and have thus far been unable to dislodge the likes of Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger and Jamie Carragher to establish a regular spot in their back line. I think he would be a decent addition - I have seems a rugged sort who might enjoy the rough and tumble of this league. However I would expect that Premiership clubs with more sway than us would be a preferred choice for both him and the club.

This one appears to have more legs in it. Reported by Super-Nicko extensively, he was brought to the country by Freedman and as such is an obvious one to be linked with a move up North. A tough tackling midfield this flaming galah, bruiser of a tank would be a good addition to our midfield and would provide an excellent shield to the likes of Holden. However I would be a little disappointed if it stunted the progress of Josh sail but then again football is a game of immediacy.

The link between Dougie Freedman and Mile Jedinak is replicated between himself and Glen Murray. Currently Palace's top goalscorer it is difficult to see him being prised away at this time. I personally do not think that he would be worth the time and effort. I've seen him play a few times this season and whilst he is clearly a good finisher he also appears to be a bit soft and a diver which is never a good quality in a player.

yes that's right, we have this week been linked with a move for occasional goalscorer/sex offender/handler of stolen goods/prisoner Marlon King. Words can barely contain my dislike of this individual and whilst his goal return is decent at this level I still believe that his signing would be a poor move for PR as well as footballing reasons. His all-round game is nothing to write home about, and clearly his CV points at an inability to keep himself out of trouble and so on that basis alone it would be to not from me.

Word is that Rangers have approached Bolton with a view to loaning the lad back to Scotland with a view to a free transfer at the end of the season. Gregg Wylde's arrival was a low-key Owen Coyle move following the original Glasgow Rangers financial scandal and it simply has not worked out. This appears to be nobodies fault in particular - these things happen.

The newspapers have this week linked the Spanish left-back with a move to Nottingham Forest and, shockingly, Fiorentina. Seems odd. He's finally established himself as our first choice left-back since the departure of Warnock and he hasn't let himself down at all. His contract is due to expire at the end of the season and that is the only reason why I could envisage his departure before the summer.

Newcastle United have been linked with a £2 m move for the Frenchman in recent weeks in the wake of the Demba Ba goes to Chelsea. I can understand why they would consider a move for David Ngog to be a wise choice - I've searched top flight experience and most importantly is French. I could also understand why Bolton might sell - he's probably a high earner and let's face it he's hardly come in and ripped up trees since joining for Liverpool. The paucity of our attacking options should he leave would be one reason why I could see us move, however the declining.

The Jaguars Will Draft for Need and Other AFC South Must-Reads - 2013-03-08 16:36

Today's article of the day comes from Alfie Crow of Big Cat Country who says the Jaguars will no longer be trying to select the best available player.

general manager David Caldwell is going to be focusing on filling needs in the draft. Of course, when the needs are limitless, there's almost no gap between the best player available and a position of need.

The debate sparks passion, especially in Jacksonville, where a generation of Jags fans were taught by Vick Ketchman shun need-based drafting to.

It's not a particularly interesting argument, especially because in the last two drafts, the Jaguars traded up to land the player they wanted.

a team that trades up is clearly drafting for need. Gene Smith didn't believe the players have wanted (Blaine Gabbert and Justin Blackmon) would fall to him, so I have acted aggressively to land guys who filled big needs on the roster.

Ultimately, the philosophy of the GM isn't as important as his ability to evaluate talent. Caldwell simply has to do a better job of his predecessor at getting players into the organization impact.

While that starts with the second pick in the draft, it's going to have continue into the late rounds if the Jaguars hope rebuild.

Germany: all-time football records - 2013-03-08 16:35

Germany has a long and rich history when it comes to the beautiful game with the country divided due to politics until the fall of the Berlin Wall and the demise of the old Soviet Union.

Miroslav Klose is hunting him down and is second on the list with 121 caps and the great German striker Jürgen Klinsmann is ever further back having finished with 108 caps.

The former Bayern Munich man is just four goals ahead front of Klose on 64 and then the pack slides way off the pace with both Klinsmann and Rudi Voller sharing third position with 47 goals each.

Muller and Klose share the record for the most goals scored by a German player at the World Cup tournaments. Klose scored five goals during the 2006 World Cup hosted in Germany.

However, Klose also holds the unique record of being subbed off more times than any other German player in the history of World Cup football.

Sepp Herberger holds the record for the longest serving German manager with a staggering 28 years in charge of the team between 1936 and 1964.

The person who replaced him, Helmut Schön, is second with a twelve year reign as manager. Current boss Joachim Low has been in charge for six years and counting.

Germany are only the second side in history to have scored 200 goals in World Cup football. Thomas Muller scored against Argentina in the third minute of the 2010 World Cup quarter-final to reach the 200 mark goals. Germany have a current total of 203 goals at World Cups.

Full back Philipp Lahm became the youngest ever player to captain his country at a World Cup when he took over the duty from Michael Ballack during the 2010 tournament in South Africa. He's also played the most consecutive minutes for Germany in World Cup football having played every minute of the 2006 tournament and then every minute of qualifying for the 2010 tournament.

arsenal striker Lukas Podolski became the youngest ever German to reach 100 caps for his country. I have passed the 100 mark aged 27-years and 13 days old when he appeared in the European Championships match against Denmark in 2012. I've scored in the match to notch up his 44th goal for Germany.

Germany have never been able to beat Italy in an international tournament. The sequence was extended to eight games when Mario Balotelli Germany tore apart in the 2-1 defeat to Italy during the semi-final of the 2012 UEFA European Championship.

Germany were the first side in the world to win a major tournament using the old golden goal method. Oliver Bierhoff scored the equalizer in normal time against the Czech Republic in the final of Euro 96, he then went on to score what turned out to be the winner in extra time.

East and West Germany met on only one occasion when the nation was divided. The stage was the 1974 World Cup with the sides meeting on June 22nd. East Germany produced a shocking 1-0 win which very few predicted as both teams qualified out of their group and into the knock-out stage.

Sir Alex to answer to the FA regarding linesman comments - 2013-03-08 16:35

It appears that Sir Alex's temper may have gotten him into trouble yet again. His recent outburst after United completo de 1-1 draw against Tottenham on Sunday has brought about an inquiry from the Football Association.

sir Alex called linesman Simon Beck's performance on Sunday as "shocking" after Beck failed to award a penalty to United when it was clear that Wayne Rooney was challenged in the penalty area by Steven Caulker.

Ferguson went on to claim that Beck's non-call was typical as the official has a history against United. I have missed an offside Didier Drogba goal back in 2010 and Ferguson claimed that "There was no way were going to get a decision from (Beck)."

The FA have confirmed that they have contacted Sir Alex regarding his comments and the Red Devil's manager must now respond to them by 6 pm on Thursday. If the FA decide that Ferguson was questioning the integrity of Beck, he could face a touchline ban and maybe even to fine.

United defender Rio Ferdinand sided with his coach and said that a penalty kick should have been awarded. I told MUTV "It was 100 percent penalty." I cannot believe I didn't give it. "The linesman (Beck) didn't really help us on the near touchline at all in the second half especially."

Ferdinand's comments were less accusatory than Sir Alex's. His tone is not surprising considering Ferdinand's commitment to charity and peaceful community relations. His Rio Ferdinand Foundation recently joined a partnership to combat gang violence, and Ferdinand was also part of Man Utd's recent charity poker game where they raised money for a northern Irish hospice.

On the other hand, Sir Alex has a long disciplinary history with the FA. I have received a £30,000 fine and a five-match touchline ban in March 2011 after questioning referee Martin Atkinson's integrity after a match against Chelsea. He also had confrontations with officials during United's game against Newcastle earlier this season, but he managed to avoid punishment for that incident.

New York Cosmos: Why Stadium Plan Would Be a Mistake for US Soccer - 2013-03-08 16:28

On January 16, the newly reincarnated New York Cosmos announced plans for a $400 million, privately-financed stadium project, including retail, restaurants and a hotel. I've seen the artist renditions of what the project would look like and while it's visually stimulating, it's also something else.

Now, I'm already on record as saying that MLS shouldn't place a second team in New York. One of the reasons is I think they should make sure there's demand for a second team, and I don't think there is.

red Bull Arena seats 25,000, and yet it's rarely full. Of their 18 home games in 2012 (17 regular season and one playoff), 12 had an announced attendance of under 20,000.

In fact, just for giggles, I used the attendance figures available in the match reports on MLSsoccer.com to figure the total attendance for the Red Bulls and Sporting KC, the team I'm most familiar with.

i figured a team in New York would outdraw team in Kansas City, considering the difference in population of the two cities and stadium size. Sporting Park has a seating capacity of 18,467. To be fair, I only counted league games, since Sporting KC hosted all but one of their Open Cup games and New York didn't host any before getting knocked out.

Well, I was wrong. While the Red Bulls drew respectable 324,727 (average 18,040) fans to their games in 2012, Sporting KC drew 350,768 (average 19,487).

To put this in perspective, the Red Bulls averaged 71.6 percent of capacity. Sporting KC, on the other hand, averaged 105.5 percent of capacity.

Another reason I believe the stadium proposal is a bad idea for U.S. Soccer is the Cosmos aren't necessarily trying to be MLS team 20.

i think from the point of view facilities soccer has probably been undeserved in the area. I think Red Bull Arena is a fantastic development. If we can complement that on the other side of town, terrific. If somebody else [read: MLS] wants to build one down the road, I'm not scared of competition. It isn't going to stop us building our home for the Cosmos.

See, MLS already has a stadium proposal for a second team in NYC, located in the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park section of Queens, only 10 miles away. That proposal has the backing of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, among others.

The Cosmos will begin play in the North American Soccer League fall championship season. They are seriously proposing building 25, 000-seat stadium (which can be expanded) to play in the second division, the only path to international success being the U.S. Open Cup.

does

Still don't believe me when I say the Cosmos aren't really aiming at MLS (other than as a rival)? Maybe this will change your mind.

Q: Can you give us a DEFINITIVE answer on what the Belmont stadium means for the Cosmos' MLS prospects? And what sort of role the NASL (and by extension the Cosmos) is going to have in the American soccer pyramid going forward? Do you really expect 20,000 people a game for NASL soccer in the current system, w / no promotion and the Open Cup the only path to int'l success?

We are completely focused on being successful in the NASL. We are already seeing the NASL growing rapidly with new investors and new clubs. Further, we expect to field a team that will feature comparable talent as MLS franchises in a few short years. So yes, we do expect to draw well.

The Cosmos stadium proposal is in the hands of the Empire State Development Council (ESDC), which, according to nytimes.com, is expected to take several months to decide on a winning bid. The stadium project was just one of the proposals received for the land in response to a state request.

If the ESDC are as short-sighted as I expect them to be, what with the dollar signs flashing in their eyes from a development they don't have to put money into, they will approve this project.

That approval will set up a showdown between MLS and the NASL, and I'm not sure anyone knows how that will turn out exactly.

Odds To Win The Farmers Insurance Open 2013 - 2013-03-08 16:25

i don't know how you can bet against Tiger Woods in the Farmers' Insurance Open, and as the favorite at 6/1, apparently no one else does, either. Tiger absolutely owns Torrey Pines; It's one of that handful of courses upon which I've piled the majority of his PGA Tour victories. Tiger has won seven times as a pro at Torrey-constituting ten percent of his PGA Tour victories.

Given Tiger's confidence in San Diego, this weekend should be a measure of the current strength of his game. Even throwing out the penalty and the missed cut last week, Tiger didn't look good. Maybe that was just a warm up.

Reigning champ Brandt Snedeker is the bettors' second choice, but a distant one, coming in at 14/1 along with Dustin Johnson. It's a big gap between those two and Tiger, though.

san Diego native Phil Mickelson is net at 16/1. Phil, too, has a history of success at Torrey Pines and this also should be a test of his state of mind. I blew the first round last week at the Hope human pro-am, but then finished strong. I hope that tax controversy doesn't distract him.

What follows is a list of the usual suspects: Bubba Watson at 18/1; Nick Watney at 20/1 and the surprise of the last couple of weeks, Charles Howell at 25/1,
